1 December: South African Youth Choir & Guguleto Tenors

The Guguletu Tenors pursue their inherent love of Opera, a genre which is not traditionally associated with the township.  By incorporating contemporary and subtle ethnic elements in their music, they have made the genre their own, capturing the hearts of audiences across South Africa with their raw talent.

The Tenors proudly represented South Africa during the 2010 Soccer World Cup, where they performed in front of thousands of fans at the Cape Town Grand Parade Fan Fest, as well as at the many Fan Walks across the greater city area.

The SA Youth Choir is not just a choir. It is an unique, multi-cultural upliftment project where disadvantaged children (some of them AIDS orphans) are given a chance to dream and to realize their full potential.

The choir consists of 86 high school learners, selected from all over South Africa. They represent the true demographics of our country. The choir comprises the raw talent of South Africa.

Conducted by multi award winning Andre van der Merwe this choir breaks away from the straight ahead choir sound to a more enjoyment based concept with interpretations unknown to formal choir singing and interspersed with lively performances.

Highlights of the performance are Halleluja ( Handel), Sing a song of Sixpence ) John Rutter), Misa Criolla ( Ariel Ramirez) and Prayer of St, Francis ( Robert Delgado).

9 & 10  December: Libertas  Choir : My Storie My Lied / My Story My Song

Conductor: Johan De Villiers, Text: Ronel Retief, Accompaniment : Zorada Temmingh & Gerhard Niemand and 3 piece band.

In My story , my song bits and pieces of different realities within the larger South-African context are portrayed through music and text

When our country and its people are scrutinized, they are seen through the eyes of different narrators that vary throughout the production, and even though the view is cast wide, the image that takes shape in song and verse, is not all-encompassing, but consists of snapshots combined in a musical collage. The music of Zoltan Kodaly and Randall Thompson co-exists with traditional folk songs and music from the coloured communities , while Pieter de Villiers’s well-known Boerneef compositions are interchanged with contemporary Afrikaans creations and adaptations by Gerhard Niemand of, among others, music by Christopher Torr and Stef Bos. The variety of musical genres within a single production enhances the idea that coherence and harmony can result from the seemingly disparate and incompatible.

A semi-dramatized exploration of Monteverdi madrigals

Renaissance poetry treats the topic of love as a fully consuming, deeply unsettling, initiatory experience, leaving one or both parties fatally wounded. With constant reference to the armed god of love, images of piercing eyes with lethal glances, cruel beauty and torn hearts abound. Marvel at Monteverdi’s ingenious translations of this imagery into richly sonorous and dramatically congruous music, in a stirring performance by the Cape Consort.

This group of musicians has carved themselves an enviable reputation of being the best performers of ancient style madrigal music.

Audiences can be confident that this performance will afford them an experience that is equally satisfying in all dramatic and musical respects. This is thoroughly in tune with the art form over the many centuries of madrigal music making such as the music of Claudio Monteverdi ( 1567-1643).

Antoinette Blyth and Lente Louw (soprano’s), Nick de Jager and Lance Phillip (tenor’s), Charles Ainslie (bariton),

Andrew Cruickshank (harpsichord) en Hans Huyssen (barokcello).
