29 February: Amongst the Prickly Thorns of Love’s Roses Prys: R 120/130/140 A semi-dramatized exploration of Monteverdi madrigals Renaissance poetry treats the topic of love as a fully consuming, deeply unsettling, initiatory experience, leaving one or both parties fatally wounded. With constant reference to the armed god of love, images of piercing eyes with lethal glances, cruel beauty and torn hearts abound. Marvel at Monteverdi’s ingenious translations of this imagery into richly sonorous and dramatically congruous music, in a stirring performance by the Cape Consort. This group of musicians has carved themselves an enviable reputation of being the best performers of ancient style madrigal music. Audiences can be confident that this performance will afford them an experience that is equally satisfying in all dramatic and musical respects. This is thoroughly in tune with the art form over the many centuries of madrigal music making such as the music of Claudio Monteverdi ( 1567-1643). Antoinette Blyth and Lente Louw (soprano’s), Nick de Jager and Lance Phillip (tenor’s), Charles Ainslie (bariton), Andrew Cruickshank (harpsichord) en Hans Huyssen (barokcello). |
