Händels Messiah: A Capella

George Fredric Händel conducted The Messiah many times in his lifetime and often altered the music to suit the needs of the singers and orchestra he had available to him for each performance. In consequence, no single version can be regarded as the “authentic” one. Many more variations and rearrangements were added in subsequent centuries.

Cape Town Opera presents the Voice of the Nation

The internationally acclaimed Cape Town Opera chorus will wow audiences with a varied music programme from South African choral works to standard operatic repertoire, (includes choruses from Don Pasquale, Romeo et Juliette, Lucia di Lammermoor, Faust, Casanova, Nabucco, La Traviate, La Boheme). Conducted and accompanied by Cape Town Opera’s energetic Chorus Master, Albert Horne, this concert performed to rave reviews in Germany in 2009 and is now being staged at the Oude Libertas Amphitheatre, which is situated on the slopes of the Papegaaiberg, overlooking the magnificent Stellenbosch mountain range – the evenings promise to be a 2010 musical hit. The concert features soloists South African soprano Angela Kerrison, just back from a three year European stint (last SA performance was Pamina in William Kentridge’s Magic Flute) and tenor Given Nkosi who sang with Renee Fleming on her 2009 SA visit.

Mark Fransman – Strait ’n Narro

The group fuses the harmonic and compositional elements of South African music and jazz, with the rhythmic structures of modern dance music. The horn section makes for exciting arrangements to singable, danceable songs, incorporating such rhythms as, hip-hop, drum and bass, jungle, funk and South African rhythms into compositions, making the music accessible to jazz or dance enthusiasts.

Karen Zoid, will perform her music as only she can. Born in Brussels as the daughter of a South African diplomat, Karen grew up in Belgium and Johannesburg where she became a teenage busker, honing her song writing, guitar playing and singing skills on the streets of Melville. Her first album, Poles Apart, fired the imagination of both critics and the public to such an extent that Zoid became an icon of the South African youth, which the press renamed the Zoid Generation. Her albums include: Poles Apart, Chasing the Sun, Media and Post Modern World. She has written songs for several artists in South Africa. Florian Uhlig – pianist

Florian Uhlig is "one of the most individual and imaginative young pianists of our time" (Musical Opinion). He is renowned for his creative resourcefulness and his wide-ranging repertoire from Bach to contemporary composers, which he combines in his inventive and original programmes. Born in Düsseldorf, Florian Uhlig gave his first solo recital at the age of twelve. He studied with Peter Feuchtwanger and continued his studies at the Royal College of Music and at the Royal Academy of Music in London where he now lives. Although it's not as showy as the Tchaikovsky or as weighty as the Brahms concertos, it is filled with the most glorious melodies and lush orchestration.

Zoë Beyers – violinist

International violinist, Zoë Beyers, was born in Stellenbosch and began violin lessons at the age of six with Noel Travers. Since her debut aged eleven with the Swedish Chamber Orchestra under Paavo Järvi, she has performed throughout South Africa and Europe with many distinguished conductors, including Vladimir Verbitsky, Bernard Gueller and Saulius Sondeckis. Francois du Toit is one of South Africa’s finest pianists, chamber musicians and music educators and will accompany Zoë in this performance. Francois is Associate Professor of Piano at the University of Cape Town where he is also Head of Chamber Music.

The desire of a group of musicians from different cultures and nationalities such as South Africa, Argentina and Mozambique, to unite and fuse different styles of music, resulted in the launch of World music Afro-tropical band Tucan Tucan. A vibrant melting pot of African rhythms such as Kwasa Kwasa, Marrabenta, Mbaqanga, Maskandi and High life with South American elements from Samba, Salsa and Chacarera with a strong jazz influence and lyrics in African languages, Spanish, Portuguese and English. Frank Opperman vertolk weer die rol van Pottie Potgieter, die werklose, Afrikaanse man, wat sy lief en leed in die bekroonde en gewilde eenmanstuk "Die uwe, Pottie Potgieter" gedeel het. Pottie is steeds werkloos, en hy besluit om as Onafhanklike Kandidaat aan ’n munisipale wyksverkiesing deel te neem. Hy stel sy saak, vertel stories, en probeer terselfdertyd sy vrou, Maggie, wat nou in Saoedi-Arabië as verpleegster werk, teruglok na Suid-Afrika. Pottie doen ’n in-diepte analise van die hedendaagse Suid-Afrika en vergelyk dit met pre-1994.
